The Austria Collection of Debrecen, as the youngest Austrian library in Hungary, was opened with all solemnity by Erich Kussbach, ambassador of the Republic of Austria to Hungary, under the auspices of the University and National Library University of Debrecen on October 20, 1993. The library belongs today to the University and National Library University of Debrecen, although from the beginnings it has its own collection and reading room.
The Austria Collection was established by the Cultural Policy Section of the Austrian Foreign Ministry (Österreichisches Bundesministerium für auswärtige Angelegenheiten, Kulturpolitische Sektion) with the collaboration of the Austrian Society for Literature (Österreichische Gesellschaft für Literatur). As one of the numerous collections established in Central-, Eastern-, and Southeastern-Europe, the library aimed to become a provider of Austrian literature, science, culture, as well as any information regarding Austria and that of the German language.
The collection initially included 3500 documents relating to Austria, every year items financed or donated by the Austrian Foreign Ministry (100-200 documents) are added to it. The library serves primarily scientific and educational purposes, its collection comprises of 5500 books at present. In this almost every area of science and everyday-life is represented, though most documents deal with Austrian literature and the scientific literature related to it. Patrons who are interested in Austria or the German language may find a rich material in our library. Magazines and periodicals dealing with everyday issues concerning Austria (e.g. Die Bühne, Profil, News, Europische Rundschau, Illustrierte Neue Welt, Österreichische Musikzeitschrift, Lichtungen) and newspapers (Der Standard, Die Presse) can also be found here. The library's cultural mission is served by programs like exhibitions, or inviting Austrian lecturers. Group visits for secondary school pupils of Debrecen , our future readers can be prearranged.
The institute enjoys the support of the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Austrian Foreign Ministry. Its work is significantly supported by instructors working in the University whose mother tongue is German.
